2009 NFL Weekly Picks - Week 1

Thursday 10 Sep

TEN @ PIT

Eddie

Pittsburgh

Fred

Pittsburgh

The Titans offense didn’t impress me much during the preseason and Chris Johnson may find it difficult to find a hole in the Steel Curtain.

Titans were a giant disappointment in preseason while the Steelers looked like they left off from last season.  At home, the Steelers will shut down that Titans offense and easily win this one, and will probably cover the 6 point spread.

Sunday  13 Sep

JAC @ IND

Eddie

Colts

Fred

Colts

I like the Jaguars offense but they aren’t anywhere near the Colts.

Jags offensive line against a great Colts defensive line spells danger for that Jags offense.  Peyton always spells stud offense.  The Colts will put up 30+ points and the Jags less than 20, so the Colts should cover the 7 point spread.

DET @ NO

Eddie

Saints

Fred

Saints

Drew Brees and the Saints won’t let the Lions start the season off with a winning record.

The 2008 0-16 Lions against the powerhouse Saints offense, who also has an improved defense.  The Saints will win this one, but I don’t think they’ll cover the 13 point spread.

PHI @ CAR

Eddie

Eagles

Fred

Eagles

I went back and forth on this one so I’m going with my gut.

I’m really down on the Carolina and Eagles defenses this year.  But I believe the Eagles have a better offense.  The Eagles will win this one, and should definitely cover that measly 1 point spread.

DAL @ TB

Eddie

Cowboys

Fred

Cowboys

Get ready Tampa – America’s team is coming to visit.

Changing an Offensive Coordinator less than two weeks prior to the Regular Season is putting your team behind the 8-ball.  And against the Cowboys, it’s guaranteeing a loss.  Dallas will win.  I could see Dallas winning by 6, so I wouldn’t touch this game with a 6 point spread.

NYJ @ HOU

Eddie

Texans

Fred

Texans

The Jets defense will be explosive but I just don’t know what to expect out of the offense.  We already know what Andre Johnson can do.

This is a tough game to call.  But since Houston’s offense will outplay the Jets offense, and the game is in Houston, the Texans should win.  A 4 ½ point spread sounds about right too…so I wouldn’t touch this game.

KC @ BAL

Eddie

Ravens

Fred

Ravens

Lucky the Ravens get a team like the Chiefs.  This should be closer than you think so I’m going with the home team.

KC is another team whose offensive coordinator got the axe way too close to regular season.   In Baltimore, the Ravens will win, but I don’t trust them to cover the 13 point spread…nor do I trust KC to beat it.  Haha

DEN @ CIN

Eddie

Bengals

Fred

Bengals

I don’t think the Bengals are as big as a sleeper team as Seattle will be but I do believe they will beat the Broncos.

In Cincinnati, Bengals all the way…but Palmer HAS to be healthy.  There was too much turnover in the offseason for the Broncos to an away Game 1 against a good team.  The spread’s 4 points for the Bengals, and that sounds about right.

MIN @ CLE

Eddie

Vikings

Fred

Vikings

Well..  the Brett Favre era continues on as the Vikes plow through the Browns.

The Vikings are a 4 point favorite against the lowly Browns!?!?!?!  OMG!  Bet the farm with this game, and don’t look back.  The Vikings are a top 4 NFL team this year, while the Browns are a bottom 6 team.  Even with it being in Cleveland, the Vikings are going to CRUSH the Browns.

MIA @ ATL

Eddie

Falcons

Fred

Falcons

Michael “The Burner” Turner, Roddy White, Matt Ryan and Tony Gonzalez…..

This is another tough game where home field advantage sways my pick.  The Dolphins were such a wild card week-to-week in ’08, and that could be the same this year.  But, the Falcons look like they’re going to be even better this year than they were last year.  It’s a 4 point spread in favor of the Falcons, but I wouldn’t touch it.

WAS @ NYG

Eddie

Giants

Fred

Giants

Brandon Jacobs is the bowling ball and the Redskins defense are the pins.  Listen to Ludracis and get out the way!

The G-Men were another team that REALLY impressed me in the preseason, while the Redskins just put me to sleep.  In New York, unless Eli makes too many mistakes (which can happen), the Giants should easily win this one.  But with only a 6 ½ point spread, the Eli Factor means I’m not touching this one.

SF @ ARI

Eddie

Cardinals

Fred

Cardinals

I’m hesitant to pick the 49ers because I’m not certain where their air power will come from.  I expect San Fran’s defense to show up but how do you stop both Fitz and Boldin.

The 2008 Super Bowl Cardinals team at home against what will probably be an okay 49ers team this year.  Cardinals will win.  With the spread at 6 ½ points, I would leave this one alone.

STL @ SEA

Eddie

Seahawks

Fred

Seahawks

Seattle is this year’s sleeper team.

Seahawks are an 8 ½ point favorite, so it looks like Vegas knows the Seahawks are a lock to win this one too.  It looks like Bulger is going to play, but if he doesn’t, put your money on the Seahawks FOR SURE!

CHI @ GB

Eddie

Packers

Fred

Packers

Watch out for Green Bay this year.  I’ll say this now so it’s documented – Green Bay will be in the Superbowl this year.

The Packers 1st string DEMOLISHED everyone in preseason.  The Bears have NO CHANCE in Green Bay.  With only a 3 ½ spread, take the Packers and laugh your way to the bank.

Monday 14 Sep

BUF @ NE

Eddie

Patriots

Fred

Patriots

Owens vs. Moss..  Brady vs…  errr

The 3rd team to scrap their awful Offensive Coordinator, against a Patriots offense that looks like they’re going to fire on all cylinders to start the season.  Patriots easily take care of the Bills and I think they’ll also cover the 11 point spread.

SD @ OAK

Eddie

Chargers

Fred

Chargers

Rivers is coming off a hot year and looks to continue his success.  I’m not certain what to expect for Tomlinson but San Diego is a better team than the Raiders

I don’t trust Norv, so there’s NO WAY I would bet the 9 ½ point spread.  And who the heck knows with the Raiders…especially if McFadden gets the ball a lot.  The Chargers are still a better all around team.
